There are a few key points to remember while traveling through Himalayas. Even though we do our very best, it is important to acknowledge that some things are simply out of our control for Example, weather, people and their concept and culture. Himalayan people by nature are very laid back and take opportunities as they come and very rarely take the "bull by the horns". In Himalayas, you simply have to hang loose, be open-minded, and allow the culture and experience to enhance your life.
Guides: There is wide variation in the knowledge and language skills of Tibetan Guides. You may have to be more flexible here than you are in other countries, and take more responsibility for your own welfare. Guides in Nepal generally very good. They speak good English and have good knowledge of their country. It is important to remember that Tibet is politically sensitive. Your actions, if inappropriate, can jeopardize not only the group, but the local people you might be trying to befriend. Generally speaking, travel and conversation is Fairly free in all areas of China, but Tibet. Nevertheless, remember, as a tourists, you may be under observation by the Chinese, particularly in Tibet. It is not uncommon for a group in Tibet to be followed. With these considerations in mind, do not bring pictures of the Dalai Lama with you into Tibet or give them to local people who ask. Do not bring Tibetan flags, printed matter, Cassettes, or anything considered seditious by the Chinese.
Tibet or in the remote areas of Himalayan China, altitude is one of the major factors to consider. Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, is at 11,400’, and you will be going higher during your travels. It is not only very important that you have physicals before departing for Tibet but you must also take precautions and necessary medications to prevent High Altitude Sickness. We highly recommend appropriate travel insurance to cover for medications.
